Digital Schools of Distinction Award
Our school was delighted to be the first school in Kilkenny and one of the first in the country to be awarded the Digital Schools of Distinction recognition for schools who strive for excellence in integrating ICT tools seamlessly into the teaching model within a school. The Digital School of Distinction Award was launched by Minister Ruairí Quinn in September 2013. It promotes excellence in the use of technology in the field of education and supports those involved in those efforts.
Over recent years we have invested heavily in technology and this award is recognition of all the work being done, in the areas of professional development, communication, recording attendance and managing the school library system. We have embraced technology here at Scoil Mhichil Naofa.
The Digital Schools of Distinction Award is a flagship programme to promote and acknowledge best practice in the use of ICT. It recognises primary schools who deliver the best educational experience of their pupils through information and computer technology. The award is promoted by the Department of Education and Skills and has been sponsored by Microsoft and Hewlett Packard.
The benefits of becoming a Digital school of Distinction include access to international resources for teaching and learning, free hardware and software, technical support and opportunities for collaboration.
To achieve the Digital Schools of Distinction Award ( www.digitalschools.ie ) ,Scoil Mhichil Naofa, Galmoy had to fulfil identified criteria within five areas – Leadership and Vision, ICT integration in the curriculum, School ICT culture, Continuing Professional Development and Resources and infrastructure school and staff use ICT in a variety of ways.
The school takes pride in the fact that the children and the teachers in the school have access to ipods, tablets, laptops, wireless internet and interactive whiteboards in every classroom. We are hugely indebted to all of those who have helped us over the years put the heavy investment in place to bring this vision to fruition. This would not have been possible without the help and support from the parents and the PArens Association body as a whole. The school uses its twitter regularly as well as facebook and its proud of its own youtube channel. Links to all of these can be seen on this website.
